UWI is an interdisciplinary research training group of engineers and natural scientists located at the Technische Universität Berlin (TUB) and the Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB), funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). The overall aim of the UWI research training group is to educate excellent graduate students in a structured framework. We want to achieve a new quality of general process understanding in urban water systems by investigating urban water interfaces as an innovative research topic, our pioneering qualification concept and interdisciplinary and international collaboration.

We are involved in sub-project W2:Scaling and connectivity assessment of critical source areas of diffuse pollution in urban catchments

The aim of this project is an advanced hierarchy and connectivity assessment of critical contaminant source areas in urban catchments under a changing regime of high-intensity storms. Project work will include the quantification of first-flush contaminant concentrations from critical and emerging urban surface types using rainfall simulation experiments. Upscaling methods of contaminant retention or export towards urban rivers and lakes will be developed to derive new, sustainable water resource management options for cities.
