CAOS (Catchments As Organised Systems) sub project

In the CAOS subproject A “Feedbacks between soils, biota, land management and hydrological processes at different spatiotemporal scales” are studied. Soil structures have an important influence on the spatial heterogeneity of soil moisture storage and transport. This subproject of the international DFG-Researchgroup CAOS focusses on understanding the abiotic and biotic influences on the soil structure with a combination of field measurements, lab measurements and modelling. The study area is the meso scale Attert catchment in Luxembourg (ca. 288 km2). In this catchment we measure and model the spatial distribution of soil macrofauna, especially earthworms and rodents, which have a large effect on the soil hydrology. We also measure spatial and temporal variability in macropores and infiltration patterns at different scales in the catchment. These infiltration patterns are analysed to quantify preferential flow. Subsequently this information is used to parameterise hydrological models with an explicit macropore flow concept based on earthworm abundance and activity.
